In 1963 he opened his dental practice in Norwood. Dr. Trail served the community as a general dentist and offered services such as orthodontics, endodontics, periodontics, and certain oral surgery procedures. He is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry, the American Dental Association, and has completed a 5 year course of continuing education with United States Dental Institute in orthodontics.

Dr. Trail has served in the public sector as a member of the Lion's Club, the Jaycees, and a member of the Norwood First Methodist Church. He participated in a church mission trip to Bolivia, helping to establish dental clinics there.

He is the son of Maxine Trail of West Virginia and the late Sherman Trail. He has three children, Julian Trail of Maryland, Mark Trail of Raleigh, and Karen Martin of Charlotte and three grandsons, Robert and Harrison Trail and Andrew Martin.

Dr. Trail has been in a partnership dental practice with Dr. Tom Norwood for 32 years along with "wonderful and caring dental staff members"

Dr. Trail has decided to slow down and relinquish his half of the partnership to Dr. Mark Lassiter and become an associate dentist in the practice of Dr. Norwood and Dr. Lassiter. He will work on a limited basis, keeping his staff members with him. Dr. Lassiter has been an associate of the Norwood Dental Clinic for nearly 8 years. According to Dr. Trail, "He is a very qualified dentist with high standards and morals"
